An Introduction

Join Bruce on his OktoberQuest - A 326.5 km solo thru-hike of the complete Rideau Trail.

EACH DAY Bruce created a video and uploaded it for all to see. Share the adventure by watching all his daily videos online. This and all OktoberQuest videos are created totally with an iPhone 4... video, edit & upload :)

In The Beginning

The beginning of OktoberQuest. Starting at Kingston City hall. More of Day 1 coming...

Not HD because only Reg Def is allowed with a 3G upload...one of the problems with doing this from a tent in the woods!

Day 1

Kingston City Hall to south of Sydenham... a 29.1 km day.

Camping spots are difficult to find, so I slept on public land just off the K&P trail. We also met Stephen Manders - a trail worker for the Rideau Trail Association. Thank you Stephen!

Day 2

From Sydenham to Gould Lake. A 23.4 km day. I spent 2-3 hours in the town of Syndenham dining at Trios Restaurant and lounging at the most excellent public library.

The previous night I used all my "battery juice" and needed to recharge before I continued the adventure. I underestimated the batteries needs plus I had application problems with my phone...all human errors! Today you see the food Bruce carries for 10 days. Actually 5 days with a re-stock 1/2 way.

Day 3

Bruce met up with my friend Bob and hiked Frontenac Park -- a 22.7 km day. The logistic for Bob were not easy, and nor was the trail. He parked his car at the "end" of the park and took a Kingston Cab from this stop to the "beginning" of the park were we met and started our day. Huge $$$ and a wonderful hike! Thanks Bob. Today you will see Bruce cook supper with his ESBIT 985 Trekking Cookset.

Day 4

Frontenac Park to Bedford Mills a very long and tough 30 km day. This was the only part of the trail without Cell coverage. I pushed it to so I could call in to my loved ones that all was OK! I Spent the night on private property with the kind permission of the land owner... Good People!

Day 5

Bedford Mills to the Narrows Locks Another crazy 30 km day. Thanks to Parks Canada for allowing campers to use the propertyKudos!

Day 6

The Narrows Locks to Murphys Point. I hike only a half day today. My wife picked me up at Lally Farm at Murphys Point park and sweep me to the Drummond House BB for the night. I will resume tomorrow after a well earned rest16.2 km day.

Day 7

Lally Farm at Murphys Point Park to Perth Started late however I hiked into the night to get to a safe camping stop in Pertha 28 km day.

Day 8

Perth to the Beveridge Locks. A short and sweet day. I had a relaxed breakfast with some friends at a local diner so I had a late start. Thanks to Parks Canada for being camping friendly... kudos!

Day 9

The Beveridge Locks to Smiths Falls. Stopped early to avoid Sandy in safety. There was lots of safe choices for camping in Smiths Falls, with expected 90 kph winds Bruce choose a Hotel! While in town he was interviewed by Stacey Roy of the Record/EMC news.

Day 10

Smiths Falls to Merrickville. A 32 km day. The back and shoulders are good, but the feet are swelled, tender and bruised. Lots of hiking on gravel today...OUCH! The Bonus.. I stayed at one of the most wonderful BBs the Wolford House. Brian and Carol were excellent hosts and they are very friendly and accommodating to both hikers of the Rideau Trail, and paddlers of the Rideau Canal.

DAY 11

Merrickville to SPOOKY Marlborough Forest Its Halloween. The Coyotes, and I later learned wolves, were howling all night. But more scary was the Witch of Marlborough Forest or possibly zombies circling the tent!

DAY 12

A monster day with the passion to get home Bruce hiked 45 km from the Marlborough Forest to West Ottawa.

DAY 13 - THE END

DONE! The whole 326.5 km of the Rideau Trail is complete. Today Bruce hiked 16 km from West Ottawa to the Ottawa Locks of the Rideau Canal. Yahoo, Yippee, Horray, Ouch, Ouch my feet. Time for some rest and relation before the next adventure.
